Alexa Ohanian is one of the founders of Reddit, an interface that greatly changed our usage pattern for the internet today. Often known to be the “Startup Guy,” he has more to his name than just Reddit, which he has founded. Another company that he has founded is called Breadpig, Inc. What makes this company special is that it has successfully integrated parts of nerd culture into charity.

Alexis was born April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York. He was always a computer nerd even as a young boy, according to sources who knew him. Gaming communities such as Quake 2 and EverQuest easily led to the pursuit of web design, which in turn led to an interest in online communities. That interest stayed with him through his time at the University of Virginia, where he studied history and German, intending to become a lawyer.

But fate had other plans. Alexis met Steve Huffman, with whom he would later co-found Reddit. A decisive moment came when they attended a lecture by Paul Graham of Y Combinator, on how to start a startup. Their first idea a mobile food ordering service failed to fly. It was their backup idea, Reddit, that caught fire. The ideal of user-driven content changed the way people were consuming news, propelling Reddit to well over 35 million unique visitors.

For instance, in 2006, Reddit was bought by Conde Nast. Alexis stayed on for a bit and then left the company in 2010. He took a step back from the tech world and spent this time volunteering in Armenia with Kiva, helping entrepreneurs raise funds.

When he returned to the U.S., Alexis had not gone out with a bang of startups. He started Breadpig, a popular seller of nerdy products, LOLmagnetz, and all its profits go to charity. Alexis also co-founded hipmunk, the travel search site. It is enough to show he is great at building useful and funny tools.

But Alexis is more than just a builder of stuff. He is a mentor and investor who has backed over 50 startups and helped such young entrepreneurs find their way. His creativity also comes out through the logos he designed for Reddit, hipmunk, and Breadpig. As an ambassador for Y Combinator, he continues to be an influence in the startup scene, especially on the East Coast.

Alongside all the above-mentioned business ventures, Alexis is also in high demand as a speaker. He was once a speaker at Yale, MIT, and even at the TED symposium on entrepreneurship and innovation. His counsel has also been sought by large companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Kraft.

The media carries Alexis in notable pages such as The New York Times and Forbes, and he has appeared on channels like CNN and MSNBC. His influence is not strictly tech-related because of his interests-from football to hummus, which makes him a person relatable and dynamic.

Alexis Ohanian is more than just a good entrepreneur: he’s a true leader. He spots new, exciting talent and nurtures his creativity-that drives him to continually push at the edge of what is possible in tech and beyond. Whether it’s Reddit, Breadpig, or investing in other projects, Alexis is just making the world a better place one project at a time.
