The honor of Dame Anita Roddick goes far beyond the business sphere. She was actually an environmental pioneer, and her human rights advocacy can be testified with much fervor. She did, of course, change the face of the beauty industry with her vision and seriousness. But for most of us, she was also the founder of The Body Shop, that fantastic cosmetics brand who pioneered the ethics way back before it became cool to be sustainable.
Early Life and Struggles
Born on 23 October 1942, in Littlehampton, England, Anita was from an Italian immigrant family who owned a small café. Anita starts working in the family café at a young age. Having very little free time to play and be mischievous, growing up in a rather small household, however all that hard work was not an accident in shaping her and definitely helped set that same mentality into her that she would later use to create a booming business.
In 1976, Anita set off on her entrepreneurial adventure while her husband was away in South America. Anita had the idea to open up the first Body Shop-the idea was that she sell her effective skincare products in reusable containers. This would not only save her money but also encourage people to care for the environment. She wanted to get enough to take care of herself and the daughters, but she ended up with something much bigger.
She opened a second one six months later. When her husband returned, he joined her to expand the business further. By 1991, the Body Shop had grown into a fantastic 700 stores across the globe.
Innovative Marketing
Anita was a marketing wizard. Her most popular campaign was the launching of Ruby in 1997 as a red-haired doll challenging beauty standards. It was such a bold move, just like Anita herself, which made The Body Shop different-like a brand that seemed cool, fun, and very strong in its dedication to ethical values. At the end of 2004, The Body Shop had 1,980 stores and served over 77 million customers, making it the UK’s second most trusted cosmetics brand. The company placed 28th among the world’s top brands.
In 2006, Anita sold The Body Shop to L’Oréal for £652 million. It had already been some controversy, because L’Oréal had a history of animal testing – something Anita was strongly against, but she remained on as part of the company to ensure that she was able to change the direction of the company once she sold it.
Humanitarian Work
Anita Roddick was also a humanitarian. She founded Children on the Edge, a charity that takes action to protect vulnerable children who are being affected by war, natural disasters, HIV/AIDS, and disabilities. Her empathy and commitment to change the world for better have earned her recognition all around the world. She associated with Demos, a UK think tank. She had written Take it Personally, an advocacy book calling for economic and social justice and wrestling the grave struggles of third-world workers.
In addition to this, Anita was also a very charitable philanthropist; she planned to donate most of her wealth, which was roughly estimated at £51 million back then. Her efforts were not in vain; she was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988 and earned multiple accolades such as an honorary Doctorate from the University of Sussex, the Mexican Environmental Achiever Award, and the UNEP Honouree Eyes on the Environment Award.
Personal Challenges and Legacy
Although Anita had won so many accolades, she struggled with health issues at a personal level. In 2004, she was diagnosed with hepatitis C, which came through blood transfusion in the process of childbirth, and later resulted in the liver disease cirrhosis. She died on September 10, 2007, after a brain hemorrhage.
Very true to her values, Anita left her entire estate to charity, ensuring that her legacy of generosity and activism should indeed continue. Such stories remind people that one can indeed change the world, inspiring countless others to walk the path left for them by her. Anita Roddick was an entrepreneur, a beacon of hope and change to many, and her impact will live on for years to come.
