SECTION The Fearless Life of Aristotle Onassis: From Rags to Riches

Question: As much as we’d like success, very few of us know just how hard it can be. How did Aristotle Onassis transform from rags into one of the richest and most powerful men on earth?

Agitation: Imagine that you were born in a small town. You faced hardship times and then had to leave your home as a refugee. Then you imagine going through adversity, taking every opportunity, and changing fate. That’s what reality was for Aristotle Onassis when dealing with many challenges but never losing his goals.

Solution: Let’s trace the incredible path of Onassis: determination, business acumen and the ability to reinvent oneself. And his saga isn’t even about the wealth; it is actually about the ambition and resilience.

Aristotle Onassis was born January 20, 1906 in Smyrna, Turkey. His family used to call him “Ari,” and they were poor. After leaving Smyrna in 1922 to escape the Great Fire, he and his family became refugees. Rather than being paralyzed by losses, Onassis used these losses as a springboard to success. By his 16th year, he could speak four different languages: Greek, Spanish, Turkish, and English and was already exhibiting a flair for survival.
By 1923, Onassis had moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he hoped to find better opportunities. Starting out in a rather lowly position at British United River Plate Telephone Company, Onassis did not remain idle. Instead, he was kept apprised of all big talk and took the time to know the business. This would prove to become his good smart move and put him in the right position to head off his own projects and push him into his first big opportunity. When he heard a film wherein the lead actor would smoke, then he seized the opportunity to launch a cigarette brand that gained success. It became so successful and was even advertising through a famous opera singer. He was already a millionaire at the age of 25.

However, Onassis wasn’t finished yet. In the late 1920s, just when the average person was retreating during the Great Depression, he saw a future for shipping. He bought six ships at bargain basement prices, betting his bottom dollar on the market recovering. And recover it did. By the beginning of World War II, he leased his fleet to the Allies, greatly increasing his wealth and further upping his reputation as a savvy businessman.

In 1957, Onassis once more expanded but into the airline business this time. This was when he took over the struggling Greek National Airline which he made Olympic Airways a source of national pride for Greece. His vision and determination were unmatched.

Onassis’s personal life was as interesting as his business life. He married Athina Livanos, daughter of a shipping magnate and had two children. But all of that remained short-lived since Onassis began an openly publicised affair with the opera singer, Maria Callas and he made such a great deal of it that there were public scandals galore.

The most scandalous relationship came soon after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Onassis became close to Jackie Kennedy, the wife of JFK. They married in 1968-a hit with much controversy, especially in the United States-soon afterward.

Apart from shipping and airlines, Onassis ventured into whaling off the coast of Peru between 1950 and 1956. The very first expedition reaped for him $4.5 million as profit. He sold the business to a Japanese company for $8.5 million later on. This reflected that even the most dubious industries could be turned profitable in his hands.

Aristotle Onassis spent his life in continuous change and ruthless ambition. He built his fortune with charm, business acumen, and fearlessness about tackling any opportunity that would come his way. He died on 15 March 1975 in France, but the person he left behind is Christina his daughter, and also in memory of his son Alexander who died tragically in a plane crash, the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation.

In a word, Onassis was no man after riches; rather, he was marking the world. His journey from refugee to shipping tycoon is a mighty reminder that with determination and boldness, one can write a different story than what might have been projected. Business or life, Onassis is inspiration to chase the dream fearlessly.
