Barbara Corcoran’s story is that of rags to riches, quintessential in every sense. Born on March 10, 1949, she was Edgewater, New Jersey, sans the silver spoon or any such natural academic gift. As a matter of fact, Corcoran has confessed candidly that she was not exactly a straight-A student. Yet, what she lacked in grades, she made up for in her hustle and sharp business acumen.

From St. Thomas Aquinas College, class of 1971 in education: Barbara tried teaching for about a year. It didn’t stick. She knew she wanted more control over her future and to be her own boss. After bouncing between 20 odd jobs, including waitressing, she finally took a $1,000 loan from her then-boyfriend and co-founded her real estate company, The Corcoran Group.

In the mid-1970s, Barbara started “The Corcoran Report,” where she issued reports on trends in the real estate market. This act catapulted her to the status of a house-hold name in the New York City firmament of real estate. Then, the boyfriend left her and ran off with her secretary, but Barbara was left with the business-and no regrets. She turned that $1,000 loan into a multi-billion-dollar empire, proof that it’s not how you start it’s how you push forward.

She sold The Corcoran Group for the astonishing sum of $70 million in 2001 to NRT LLC. She became a real estate mogul, but the ride did not stop there. Her brand continued to grow, and today she is a household name on television. You’re probably familiar with the NBC show *Shark Tank*, where she’s a regular investor in dozens of startups-many of which have turned very, very profitable. Within the very first season, 8 of the businesses she invested in seemed to really take off, further demonstrating her acute business acumen.

Outside of TV, Barbara is an expert real estate analyst for NBC TODAY and has anchored her own show on CNBC called The Millionaire Broker with Barbara Corcoran. She is also a frequent columnist, publishing her insights in such outlets as The Daily Review, More Magazine, and the New York Daily News.

On top of all this, Barbara is an author of several best-selling business books, including If You Don’t Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons on Your Pigtail, which translates into a very provocative title that is as individualistic as Barbara is. Her books are sown together with practical advice on running a business and entertaining anecdotes to make reading easy and informative for upcoming entrepreneurs.

A story of resilience and ungiving belief in self, Barbara even having faced personal casualties, such as her boyfriend leaving her, was eventually able to build an empire from this. Today, she is amongst those high-sought speakers, business consultant, and a role model to all entrepreneurs. Presently, Barbara resides in New York City with her husband and two children, inspiring and coaching others in a no-nonsense attitude and great entrepreneurial success.

Barbara Corcoran shows that just doesn’t matter where you’re coming from or how many times in life knocks you down, but the problem is that it’s getting up and staying that counts-that’s why she has to be one of the most inspiring businesswomen of our time.
