But Poole isn’t some flashy tech mogul he just sits in his mom’s basement building one of the most discussed online communities alive.
Born in 1988, Poole made a splash when he was just 15 years old and landed a profile in The Wall Street Journal. He’s also known by the nickname moot, especially to the millions of visitors that flock to 4chan each month. 4chan is an image board that allows users to post pretty much anything anonymously, and it quickly became infamous for its anything-goes attitude. Of course, although there are 43 different boards on the site, from video games to origami, the “random” board is the most popular–and often, the most unhinged. It’s the wild west of the internet, full of obscene, offensive, and often downright contentious postings. But for all the notoriety of the site, Poole himself isn’t quite the stereotypical troublemaker one might expect. He keeps a relatively private life and tends to avoid the limelight.
