How Craig Newmark Built Craigslist: The Story Behind the Man

Craig Newmark is purely the brain behind the global online marketplace known as Craigslist. His journey towards becoming that man, however, was a story of determination and adaptability. The passion for building something useful for people made him who he is.

Early Years: Struggles to Success

He was born on December 6, 1952, in Morristown, New Jersey. Craig’s childhood was rather difficult. Following the death of his father, his mother fought hard to get Craig through school, for that was all she knew he could do. Craig did well in school. Throughout his education, he attained a series of scholarships to fund his education. In 1975, he graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a Bachelor of Science degree. By 1977, Craig had completed a Master of Science degree.

From Programmer to Internet Pioneer

Craig went directly to IBM upon college graduation and stayed there for 17 years in a row. He spent his days in such cities as Boca Raton and Detroit, but it was such a backdrop for valuable experience in the tech world. After leaving IBM, Craig moved to San Francisco for a job at Charles Schwab. It was there that he first became acquainted with the internet it changed everything.

A little over a decade later, Craig began an e-mail list of acquaintances for information about local events in San Francisco in 1995. This idea to share useful information eventually extended and eventually became the free platform known as Craigslist, from which people can exchange goods and find jobs. What started out as a hobby soon turned into something much bigger. People fell in love with the idea, and soon the e-mail list became a full-fledged website.

This was because trust was the basis on which Craigslist was built, and that is what made it attractive. People knew they could go to the site and find the things they need: either a job, a couch, or a place to stay. The site was simple in design, with straightforward function available to the masses.

Today, Craigslist is one of the top 10 most visited websites in the English-speaking world, present in nearly every country but Antarctica. In the year 2004, eBay bought 25% of Craiglist; a deal that demonstrated how similar these two companies were in values and business approach.

Other ventures and philanthropy of Craig Newmark

Even though Craigslist is now a huge success, Craig didn’t stop there. He’s still closely involved in the day-to-day operations, particularly dealing with customer service issues like spamming and scams. Outside of Craigslist, in 2011, he founded Craigconnects, an organization that enables people to better publicize organizations doing good work. His goal here is to use the internet to serve the greater good.

Craig is already famous for his charitable endeavors. He contributed his input to projects including NewAssignment.Net, Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, and Wikipedia. His capacity as a participant in government officials in using the internet for the service was also groomed. The internet always has to be free and open for everyone as regards Craig

Though he has gained a gigantic success his wealth was estimated to be around $400 million in 2010, Craig is ground-to-earth. He still lives in San Francisco with his wife, Eileen Whelpley whom he married in 2012. His philosophy is very simple: the key thing is good customer service and “doing good work”, and he persuades other tech entrepreneurs to adopt similar approaches.

Craig Newmark’s story shows how simple ideas can empower an individual, and how staying true to what really matters is helping others-is essential. What once started out as a hobby for Craig has today reached millions across the globe, while success comes with keeping committed to doing something that benefits everyone.

Craig had another good lesson for other entrepreneurs: “Focus on the people and everything else will follow”.
