The David Geffen Saga: From Mailroom to Media Mogul
David Geffen is a name that stands tall in the entertainment world. He knows how to create record labels like Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and DGC Records and also how to co-found DreamWorks SKG. It’s an inspiring saga of grit, ambition, and perseverance.
Problem: An Unfocused Youth
Born on February 21, 1943, in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents, Geffen’s early life didn’t exactly scream “future billionaire.” He was aimless. After spending time at New Utrecht High School, he jumped around to several colleges, including Santa Monica College, Brooklyn College, and the University of Texas, dropping out of each before finishing his degree.
Geffen also was not afraid to quit jobs when necessary. He worked at CBS TV studios, but his bold proposals got him canned. Ambitious, he hadn’t yet learned how to tap that drive.
Agitation: The Intensity of Success Possession
That must have been a source of great entertainment for David, as it was inspired by the Hollywood legends and was dealing directly with the likes of Louis B. Mayer. Inspiration, of course, was not enough, though. His personal turning point came when he managed to get himself into a job as a mailroom assistant at the William Morris Talent Agency.
This was no glamour job, but Geffen did not treat it as another gig. He used it as a stepping stone. He climbed the ladder within one year to become a junior agent. Managing Laura Nyro’s career opened doors, and by the 1960s he made his first million dollars.
In 1970 he co-founded Asylum Records with Elliot Roberts. Among the legendary artists he signed were The Eagles, Jackson Browne, and Linda Ronstadt, all of which defined the rock-and-roll sound of the 1970s. By 1971 he had sold the label to Warner Communications, making one of the biggest music deals of the time.
His discovering of stars continued into the 1980s when he started Geffen Records. He scored success with, among others, Elton John, John Lennon, and Donna Summer. However, music wasn’t everything he was known for. Geffen ventured into film and scored such classics as Risky Business, Beetlejuice, and Little Shop of Horrors.
In 1994, Geffen teamed up with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg to co-found the film and animation company that would shake the film world DreamWorks SKG.
Giving Back: Philanthropy and Recognition
Geffen’s success didn’t end there. He gave liberally to causes close to his heart, among them AIDS research, advances in medicine, and the arts. Part of his donations were $200 million to UCLA, which renamed the school’s medical program the David Geffen School of Medicine.
He won the 2010 Ahmet Ertegun Award from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in recognition of his impact on music; two years later he received the 2011 President’s Merit Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
From doing odd jobs to becoming a tycoon with a net worth valued at $5.5 billion, David Geffen’s journey was one of perseverance and ambition. Be it molding the music industry or showing as much concern towards society, it is Geffen’s legacy that speaks of relentless impact. If you ever feel you can’t do it, remember: even David Geffen began by working in a mailroom.
